Blighted Ancient Grain Bowl
Staff Recipe
Fields fallowed by the miasma? You can have this on the table in 20 minutes.
Ingredients
As many grains as you can gather, preferably about one cup per person
Water (strained)
One bunch dandelions, chickweed, clover or other edible plants, if available
A handful of crickets (in season)
Directions
Chef’s note: When gathering your grains, be cautious. Remember the buddy system when going outside, and try to stay hidden. No meal is worth becoming one of them.
Scrub the bat and rat droppings from your grains and greens.
If any sulfur is present, rinse it away with clean water if you have enough to spare.
Pour a measure of water into your cooking vessel. A good rule of thumb is 2:1 water:grains.
Over a fire, bring your strained water to a rolling boil.
Add the grains. Stir occasionally, cooking until they are tender (or minimally edible) and water is mostly absorbed.
Remove from heat and add your greens. If you happen to have salt, it would be a good addition. Dried tears can be saved as a source of salt; use sparingly.
Roast your crickets until crispy.
Portion your grain bowls and garnish with roasted crickets.
Imagine a nice pat of butter melting slowly on the top of the dish as you enjoy.
